Irregular Periods cause all sorts of problems for many women and although they are most likely to affect women during the perimenopause they can also be brought on by other factors.
The textbook definition of a period is uterine bleeding that occurs every 24-30 days. A woman may have her period every 35 days and this can be considered normal as well.
Since the primary reason for the uterus is to carry a baby, the absence of pregnancy each month results in shedding of the uterine wall, and what is known as a menstrual flow. This menstrual flow can last anywhere from two to five days.
For many women the menstrual cycle runs like clockwork, but for others bleeding may occur as much as twice a month. Still others may experience spotting or in some cases no period at all for months at a time.
What can be done About Irregular Periods?
The first thing to do is to make an appointment with your gynecologist for an examination as irregular menstruation could be a symptom of fibroids or endometriosis. It won’t hurt to make an appointment with your doctor right away.
Also, you might want to have a complete physical examination including having your thyroid checked to rule out thyroid malfunction.
If you have a lot of stress, find ways to deal with it and release it every day.
Try to get get a minimum of 20 minutes of of moderate exercise at least four to five days a week.
Why? Exercise releases stress fighting endorphins.
Then take a deep breath.
Yoga and meditation are also great stress busters. Exercise should make you sleep better, have more energy and feel less stressed.
Try changing your diet by eating plenty of vegetables especially broccoli, and eat at least two servings of fruit a day. When choosing produce remember that organic fruit and vegetables will lower your risk of exposure to xenoestrogens.
True, it is a little more expensive to buy organic food, but think of how much you can lessen environmental stress on your body.
Natural progesterone can go a long way to help rebalance hormones. Herbs like Vitex or chaste berry are is excellent natural remedies for correcting irregular periods. Try drinking Apple Cider Vinegar and taking Blackstrap Molasses on a regular basis.
Beware of birth control. These products contain have very high levels of synthetic hormones that will severely interfere with hormonal balance.
It is best if you produce your own hormones as naturally as possible. A good place to start is lifestyle change, diet, herbs and other natural modalities.
